"Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to
look like you've just got off your broomstick, showing off
with that stupid Snitch, walking down corridors and
hexing anyone who annoys you just because you can —
I'm surprised your broomstick can get off the ground
with that fat head on it."

just a word on the logic behind his name: "oscar" is thought to derive from the gaelic os meaning "deer" and cara meaning "lover," so putting them together you get "deer lover," which obviously refers to his animagus ability to become a stag. his middle name, "jacob," is the original hebrew name that the more modern name "james" is derived from. "smithson" is the site's canon name for reincarnated james.
oscar jacob smithson is a fifth year gryffindor student with quite the american accent-- which is just fine with him, because he feels it makes him sound somewhat exotic compared to all of the familiar english tones around him. as far as oscar knows, he's had a great life thus far; attending the finest magic school in america up until his third year, when it was decided that hogwarts would be a better fit for him. now, in his fifth year, he's still having the time of his life at hogwarts, but he can't help but feel like his memories are all a little bit... out of sync. he knows all of the facts, of course-- he knows the names of his parents, the city he was born in, and even all of the schools he has attended by heart, but it's in the details that he gets things confused. if someone asked him to find his hometown on a map, he is pretty sure he wouldn't be able to even locate it because he has no clue what's around it. he doesn't know his parents' birthdays or their anniversary, and he couldn't quite tell you how long he attended each school that he has been to throughout his childhood. sometimes it concerns him a little bit that these details are so fuzzy-- but they're so minor that he gets through it just by trying not to think about it. after all, oscar smithson has much more important things to think about, such as how many times he can score a quidditch goal in one practice, and how load he can get his fans to cheer for him.
what oscar really doesn't know is that he's actually the reincarnation of james potter, father of one mr. harry potter, and product of the paper angels' experimentations. while a few things may have changed from the original potter senior, much of his personality and attributes remain very much the same. for example, appearance-wise, though his hair is considerably lighter than it once was, oscar still needs his iconic spectacles in order to see what's in front of him; without his glasses, he's about as blurry as an out-of-focus photograph. another unchanged thing is oscar's wild and decidedly unkempt hair, which never quite does as he tells it to, though it doesn't really bother him all that much because the more he runs his hands through it, the more windswept his look becomes until you could swear he'd just gotten off the pitch after a winning game.
it is in oscar's personality that you find the most similarity to his former self, however. oscar is quite the arrogant fellow, thinking quite a lot of himself, and considerably less of everyone else-- though that doesn't stop him from making a lot of friends. after all, not everyone can be as awesome as he is. he's witty, funny, and quite clever, although his laziness and lack of practical prioritizing places his studies quite farther down on the list than they probably should be. classes that he really ought to be acing are often the ones he slides through on the skin of his teeth simply because he never seems to find the time to actually do his coursework. he has quite the sense of entitlement, and often acts as though he can solve just about any problem you can throw at him if he thinks about it from enough angles.
oscar is quite the charmer and he will flirt with just about any girl who looks his way, particularly the cute ones. he seems to have a bit of an affinity for redheads, but really, any cute girl is fair game for him. he considers girl-chasing to be a fun challenge for him; if a girl says no, that's all the more reason to keep at it until she says yes. no one can resist oscar smithson forever.
one thing that can be said for oscar is that he is extremely loyal. he'd sooner die than betray his friends, and although his undying trust takes a while to earn, once you have it, it is very, very hard to lose. he would never so much as second-guess his closest friends, and he would hope that they would trust him just the same. he's a bit of an elitist and loves being invited to get involved in things that others may not have the chance to do, or be part of groups that are strictly invite-only. he loves to be the center of attention, and he will rarely back down from a challenge or a fight. oscar smithson, like his deceased counterpart, is a gryffindor through and through, and that is certainly something that will never change.
