Laying beneath one of the many trees along the Black Lake was none other than Mason Montague, a book held above is head, being used to block the sun from his eyes and also as his cure from boredom. It was a potions book he had bought in Diagon Alley before school, detailing more complex potions than the ones he was learning in his sixth year potions class. Most people would find this dull, reading up on potions, but it was easily Mace’s favorite subject and he found it to be rather interesting.
It was actually a beautiful day out, which was why he had chosen to take his usual reading outdoors to enjoy the weather. Although, most of the students who had chosen to be outdoors on such a day were at the pitch or running around in groups being obnoxious. This was why he was as far away from anyone else as possible, in his own little secluded area to find some peace from the annoyances. Mace was likely one of the most anti-social students in this school, he preferred not to be bothered. He enjoyed his time spent on his own, most people just lacked decent qualities now a days, they were all ignorant and unintelligent. It was enough to drive someone mad, having to live in a school and share a dorm with such people. That was why he spent as much time as possible one his own, he had several of his own little ‘secret’ places around the school, although they weren’t really secrets as much as they were just unpopular and considered boring to most of the student body.
The worst part of being at school had to be the Wicked Wands though, it was such a waste of his time to attend the meetings and act as if he truly cared about whatever silly cause they were going on about. There were more important things for him to be doing, worrying about whom other people chose to procreate with was not one of them, even if some people chose muggles. If he had everything his way, he wouldn’t even acknowledge the existence of the Wicked Wands or the Paper Angels.

As Mace continued to read his book, he got that feeling one gets when they are being stared at, which caused him to casually close the book and place it in the grass next to him. Slowly sitting up, he brushed his fingers through his hair, glancing around until he saw a blonde sitting just a few trees away. She was not outright staring at him, but he was certain she had glanced over once or twice. Being a very observant person, he knew exactly who she was from her familiar face, he knew everyone in Slytherin house that was fifth year and up. He disliked most of them, but he still knew who they all were. It wasn’t that he truly cared to know, he was just the type who paid attention to small details and had a rather wonderful memory.
He leaned his back against the tree, watching the girl curiously, not afraid to outright stare at someone. Mace didn’t care what anyone in this school thought of him, he was certain everyone outside of Slytherin saw him as a creep, that was how he liked it though, that way no one would approach him. As he stared over at Kara, the things he found to stand out about her in the past were her very well hidden and subtle acts during Care of Magical Creatures. Most people didn’t notice Mace, he blended into a crown, meaning it was easy for him to notice things. Generally, he only watched others to think of how unintelligent they were, very rarely did someone actually catch his interest.
The one day in Care of Magical Creatures, Kara had caught his interest. Most everyone was busy chasing and attempting to control the silly creatures they had all been assigned to, Mace was sitting at the edge of the forest propped up on a tree, much like he was now, and watching them mostly fail. Off to the side he had noticed Kara, she was doing rather well actually, which was what caught his attention in the first place. Being off where she was more so alone, he watched how gently she was, watched how she let her guard down just the tiniest bit while caring for the creature.
”Kara, correct?” he called over to her, his face stoic as usual, his tone calm soft, as if slightly bored. Mace just assumed she more than likely didn’t know his name, he really did a good job at blending in, not attracting attention to himself. It wasn’t that he was shy at all, he just knew he was better than most people here and would rather not have them attempting to make conversations with him. Unless he started the conversation, he wasn’t interested.

Mason noticed as the girl seemed to be debating on whether to acknowledge him or not, it wasn’t off putting in his eyes though. He knew people disliked him, he wanted to be dislike by them, wanted to be left alone in most cases. Sometimes, like now, he would find someone who peeked his interest and seemed to possibly be worth having a conversation with. While he didn’t know much of Kara, he did know she was different from most of the other Slytherins, which left him to wonder what she was truly like. His intentions weren’t necessarily good, there were more so just curious, if he decided he disliked her, he could easily spill her secrets to the rest of their house, it all depending on how he felt.
It wasn’t a lot of work to impress Mace, it was more so either you did or you didn’t, there was no trying with him. Either you’re an interesting character, or you’re insanely normal and a bore.
As her eyes finally shifted to him, Mace kept a straight face, he never gave way to emotion, not in his tone or his expressions. A majority of the time he felt little emotion other than utter boredom. When her mouth curved into a small smile, his did not change, although he gave a slight nod in response to her comment. Mason had never been much of a conversationalist, mainly because he had a lack of people to hold conversations with. ”I see you sometimes, when you think no one’s watching. You’re not what you want everyone to see you as,” he was always one to go straight to the point, to speak out on what was on his mind. Kara was interesting to him, he wanted to explore her interesting factors and make a decision on her character. It was a bit of a test in his eyes, although the other person never knew they were being tested.
Most of the time, Mason paid little attention to whether a girl was attractive or not, to him it was more about the personality and intelligence versus just checking a girl out. This was why so many people his age were rather annoying, they made the dumbest decisions and were generally all ignorant. Not to mention, he needed someone who was worth his time, which he never could seem to find in this ridiculous school. Safe to say, he paid no attention to Kara’s appearance, other than to use it for clues on what might be running through her mind.

Mace was not one to spend his time teasing others, if he disliked someone he simply ignored them, he would never seek someone out just to bother or annoy them. Putting energy into bothering others was a waste of his time, he had more important or interesting things to do during his day. If someone confronted him or started an argument, he wouldn’t back down, but it was still a waste of his precious time, spending it exchanging insults. No one else’s opinions of him had ever mattered in the past, he was certain no one’s would ever matter in his future either.
He was already in his sixth year, yet had never come close to a relationship. This was because there were no woman here who were worth caring over. They were either insanely boring or rather annoying, so many teenage girls were giggly and flirtatious, not to mention easy to bed. A girl who thought so low of herself as to snog every boy in her year was not the type for Mason, he needed a confident, intelligent and mature girl, which he would never find in this school.
At her question, he thought it over for a minute, before shaking his head slightly. ”I just pay close attention, it took a while of watching you to finally catch your guard down,” he admitted, not worried about if he sounded like a stalker, her opinion of him didn’t matter, he just found her situation interesting. ”Why do you pretend? Do you care so much of what others think?” he questioned curiously, his eyes intensely staring over at her, his facial expression remaining passive.
Mason had no intentions of saying anything rude to her, unless she became an annoyance or started a confrontation first. Like mentioned before, he was above seeking out and starting arguments or teasing, it was a waste of time. ”No one is worth worrying over their thoughts and opinions of you,” he added, it was more so advice, he found it ridiculous when people cared so much over other’s thoughts. The fact that she seemed a bit on edge gave him the idea that she cared of what he would say about her also.
