Declan has never been one to ask for things--just to demand them. As the only son, he is used to getting his way, simply because he's the one that his father trusted to make decisions and be strong. He has grown up with the thought that man is the protector and that man should do what he has to to make sure that his family is supported. Women, in Declan's eyes, are dainty creatures that should be treated like porcelain dolls. As such, despite the fact that his sister is older, Declan feels that he needs to protect her from men that are not like him. He also fancies himself a protector of all women, although, since he was raised with his sister [naturally], he knows that she is the daintiest flower of all.

Even as he assumes that all women need protection, he assumes that he knows best what everyone needs. He is not afraid to inform people of exactly how they should change or what sort of help they should get and often takes charge in places he has no business taking charge. He likes telling people what to do and is used to people listening, since his father has always trained him that forcefulness and willpower get things done. He has never really had to work hard to get anything and generally expects that people will listen when he talks and do what he says without question. He always assumes that he can do things better than everyone and does not hesitate to share this.

The worst part about Declan's ego is that he is actually fairly good at some of the things he claims to be good at. He has, for instance, been playing quidditch ever since he could ride a broom and though he is not on the team due to reasons that he would prefer not to disclose, he is still an excellent player. He is a good student when he wants to be and, whether or not he's smart, he's good at doing his homework and looking for answers. The fact that his ego is supplemented by real talent just makes him that much more of a braggart. It's hard to have a conversation with Declan without hearing about how great he is or about how connected his father is.

If you are one of the "lucky" few to avoid this, then you are probably not so lucky at all. Declan, though he has a temper, is far better at making other people mad than getting mad himself. While he is easily offended, he's also quick to retort. In general, he is a pot stirrer. Put him in a room with people and he will find the fastest, most efficient way to have them all fighting and looking up to him for guidance. He finds other people fighting to be entertaining, especially when he can come out of it looking like a perfect angel. When he gets into arguments, he tries to get under the other person's skin rather than yelling, although he is very easily offended and often ends up blustering and shouting even when he doesn't want to.

Since he has such a large ego, Declan is not the type of person to back down from a challenge. He has been known to take on dares that land him in medical facilities and has also been known to break the rules in the name of his honor. Other than that, however, he is not a rule breaker.
