"So what, I'm not your average girl? I don't meet the standards
of this world."
born to parents leroy kelsey and yuka tachikawa, delaney rose kelsey came into the world on july fourteenth, making her sixteen years old. her parents were also muggles, which meant she was a muggleborn witch. looking nothing like her mother, delaney has strawberry blonde hair, fair skin and freckles, which she attributed from her father. some have questioned the fact that she doesn't have any of her mother's features, seeing as her mother is asian, but she happened to be one of those cases where she recieved all of the genes from one parent and hardly any from the other. the only thing that is the same as her mother's are her eyes, which happen to be a light brown color. of course, there was one thing that delaney is that has nothing to do with her parents. she was born deaf and it was diagnosed as a permanent condition. while some deaf people are incapable of speaking as well, or are too embarrassed to, delaney is perfectly capable of and willing to speak due to years of speach therapy.
at a young age, delaney was placed in daycare for those that were hearing impaired, where she met her soon to be friend, fred weasley. it didn't take long for the two to hit it off and become good friends. even when it was time for them to start school, they attended the same muggle school for the deaf. even though fred was a wizard, his father agreed to let him attend. of course, delaney was excited to at least know one person when she started school. classes ended up coming easy to her and soon enough she was heading to the top of her class. for that, she was excited as well. well, as excited as any little kid could get about grades and whatnot. as the two started to get older, they started to hang out more outside of school too. she would invite him to her house to play and vice versa. it wasn't long before this muggle girl learned about the wizarding world. fred told her himself, once he started to trust her. at first, delaney didn't know whether or not to believe him, but she did learn to. once she got used to it, she fell in love with the idea of being a witch or wizard. she started to read things about it on her own, which her parents thought was a phase of course. she never told them about the weasleys. she would never blow a secret like that.
at age eleven, an unexpected letter came in the mail. it was her acceptance letter to hogwarts. her parents, didn't take it well at all. they didn't believe it to be true, and then when they figured it was, they freaked out about the fact their daughter was magical. on her own, she couldn't calm them, so she called in the experts. her best friend and his father of course. they all sat down together and had this long talk about what was going to happen, and what they needed to prepare for. delaney was grateful for mr. weasley. if he hadn't of done anything, her parents would probably still be freaking out to this day. delaney herself was psyched for the news. she couldn't believe she had become what she dreamed of being. ever since she warmed up to the idea of fred being magical, she had wanted to be too. she wanted to be just like her best friend, and to always be able to be with him. now she had her chance, to stay close to him.
her years at hogwarts, no lie, started out hard but soon became easier as she learned to adapt to the hearing community. when she got to hogwarts, she was sorted into ravenclaw, so she was seperated from fred, seeing as he was sorted into gryffindor. but, it was okay. they still had all their classes together and she saw him outside of classes as well. she was able to make other friends too, even though it wasn't as easy as someone who could hear what others were saying. she found herself telling people to slow down a lot and to make sure they looked at her when they spoke, so she could read their lips. some people didn't understand her, which was weird, seeing as she did speak english. they didn't get it, but that was fine. she worked harder, to be able to understand them, instead of making them understand herself. it was just something she had to do, and it was who she was.
delaney is now in her sixth year, but a couple years back, she met greg who was assigned to fred as an interpreter. he ended up being hers as well. it was different for her though. she didn't need him to talk to people, seeing as she was comfortable speaking. sometimes she didn't want his help at all. but, during classes, there were times when she needed him, no matter how much she didn't want to be helped. greg became a good friend to her too, which was only natural, because they were always around each other.
personality wise, delaney can be described as different things. mainly, she is stubborn. she doesn't like people making decisions for her and she definitely doesn't like people trying to persuade her to do anything she doesn't agree with. she has morals, and she holds tightly to them. she also doesn't believe in letting people do things for her. her whole life she has learned to be independent, especially since she is deaf and she won't let being in a hearing community change that. it took her a while to even let greg help her. she didn't like the idea of an interpreter at all. even now, if he tries to help her without request, she tells him to stop and that if she needed him, she would ask for help. until she asks, leave her be.
delaney is also a very determined being. if she sets her mind on something, she will do what she needs to in order to reach that goal. this could be anything, from getting a good grade, to getting a boy's attention. the latter isn't that hard though, seeing as she still gets attention just from being deaf. it's funny how she's been there for six years, and some people still haven't gotten used to the fact. maybe it's because they aren't around her as much or something. it's understandable for the first years, cause they're new. speaking about boys though, delaney tends to be kind of, naive when it comes to them. she likes to believe that there is good in everyone, therefore she allows herself to trust easily. of course, this can pertain to anyone, but if you want to talk heartache, that comes mainly from the boys. she doesn't rush right into a relationship, but if she thinks she might like you, or there's something between herself and that boy, she'll definitely give it a shot to see where it goes.
want to know a secret? she can't lie. well, she can. it's more like she chooses not to. delaney is an honest person, and telling a lie is something she is not willing to do. it doesn't matter who you are, where you came from, how old you are, none of that matters. she will not stand there and lie to someones face. now, this can come off as being blunt, but she doesn't mean any harm by what she says and really, she won't say anything mean unless you ask a question. even then, it won't be mean to her, necessarily. it will be telling the truth and she believes that's what everyone deserves, the truth. no matter how much it hurts.
and last, she has quite the short fuse. her temper flares up usually when something isn't going right or something isn't going her way. also there's the usual temper that shows when someone messes with herself or those she cares about. her temper isn't the kind where you yell at someone though. sure, she has done that before. she has no problem yelling at someone, but what she tends to do is give the cold shoulder approach. she'll walk away and then ignore you. it's when you bug her constantly after making her mad that she yells at you, unless you have some really good reason on the spot for her to forgive you instead.
